Artisan Square Vintage, Bowen Island Identity

Practical People designed an identity for Artisan Square Vintage, a selective vintage shop by Dana Lee Brown focusing on dead stock quality garments and objects. Located in Bowen Island, a hemlock-covered community off the coast of Vancouver, Canada and practically on the edge of uninhabited wilderness.

Archetypal Typography

The logo utilizes a custom variable unicase font for wood-routing by hand inspired by Squamish carving traditions and vernacular hand made wood signage seen throughout the island and the Pacific Northwest. Cleft fencing found on Bowen Island was also a reference. When the font is routed, overlapping straight lines create a natural tolerance for imprecision, embracing a subtractive method of production.
